Stanford Super Series: Twenty20 for 20

The inaugural Stanford Super Series, bankrolled by American billionaire Sir Allen Stanford has divided opinion in the cricket world.

There are those that see the Twenty20 format as a stretch too far from the original Test format of the game, but in the other camp, there are those that see the broader appeal and the commercial opportunities that go with it. (Read on …)

Rugby League World Cup betting

Rugby League World Cup

Most people in the know in the Rugby League world are proclaiming this year’s World Cup as a one horse race, and realistically, Australia are going to win - and it’s not surprising that the best odds I can find are 3/10.

Not only are they the best team, but they are also hosting the event Down Under, and there really isn’t any point in betting against them.

That doesn’t stop Rugby League betting circles getting excited about what will be a very colourful competition. It’s true that there will be some one-sided affairs, but the organisers have done their best to avoid any humiliations, and the aim is to grow awareness and participation in the sport.

You can try and pick every result in a coupon, which sounds easy when you see games such as England v Papua New Guinea, but how much are the bookies going to know about the result between Samoa and Tonga (I’d back Samoa by the way on Betfair).

A top tryscorer bet on Greg Inglis at 10/1 with SkyBet is worth considering, but betting in running might be an ideal option over the next few weeks - the overall result might be obvious, but there’s fun to be had by betting on next tryscorer, number of tackles made and other unusual markets. It’s worth having a Bet365 if you fancy the betting in running.

Champions League betting

The English teams are in action again this week, with Manchester United v Celtic looking like the pick of the bunch.

Arsenal travel to Fenerbahce and will need to start better than they did in the Premiership at the weekend. Start slowly, and it could be a long night for the Gunners and I’m backing a draw at 12/5.

Unfortunately for Celtic fans, I cannot see United losing at home, particularly to a Scottish outfit that haven’t fared too well in this competition so far - back the reds at a measly 3/10, but take Rooney to score first since he’s in the form of his life.

I’m also backing Chelsea and Liverpool to win - the two form sides in the Premiership should manage a victory, despite Liverpool having to make a difficult trip to Atletico Madrid.

I’ve put these on with Boylesports since they offered the best odds on two of the games, and then take Rooney as the first scorer at a tasty 4/1 with Ladbrokes.

Football: World Cup Qualifying

England under Fabio Capello seem to be going from strength to strength, with Rio Ferdinand claiming a no-nonsense atmosphere in the camp.

With four wins from four and the faltering campaign of rivals Croatia, England are clear favourites to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Odds of 1/12 with Betfred on England qualifying are not particularly attractive, but the 7/1 offered by SkyBet might be worth a look given England’s turbulent history and they still need to beat the Ukraine as well as Belarus and the mighty Andorra again! Only kidding, this isn’t really worth betting on - surely England will qualify from here!

This week, Capello’s men face Belarus away from home, where the 18/5 from totesport on a draw looks particularly inviting, particularly when considering the first half display in the previous fixture. I’ve gone for a 0-0 draw at 12/1 with BlueSq.
