Betting predictions for 2009

With the dawning of the New Year, here is a selection of bets that I’ll be placing on some of the big events coming up in the next twelve months.

Premier League
Manchester United
Much as it pains me to say it, the Reds are in form whilst Chelsea seem to be declining (why can’t they defend corners anymore?). They also have a slightly easier run in, with more Home games than Away fixtures, so I’m backing Alex Ferguson to make it three in a row.

Premier League
Chelsea
With their league form diminishing, I can see the likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry demanding stoical performances from the squad in the one-off matches that count. The ultimate European reward that has eluded the London side may just save Scolari’s bacon.

Six Nations
France
I think Wales are slightly over-hyped after beating Australia in November, and although they are the favourites, I think Marc Lievremont’s side will pull it out of the bag. He’s had a while now to mould his team, and they may just produce the best rugby of the competition.

British and Irish Lions
South Africa
The romantic in me wants to see the Lions clinch another series, with Ian McGeechan in charge of another batch of underperforming Northern Hemisphere players, visiting the World Champions and taking the spoils. It’s happened before, and I’ll probably stick my patriotic money on the Lions, but the smart money is on the Home side.

The Ashes
England
Australia are a side in decline, with their old stalwarts retiring faster than the population of Eastbourne. England aren’t in great shape to be honest, but with a new captain and coach, I’m backing them to bring the Ashes back to home soil.

Wimbledon
Andy Murray
It’s got to be hasn’t it? First British champion since Fred Perry and it could mark the start of an incredible summer.

Formula One
Lewis Hamilton
The youngest ever champion is sure to rule the track for years to come. Ferrari’s new car looks a bit like a boxy builder’s van, and Hamilton should come out on top again.
