Sports Personality of the Year Betting
It’s that time of year again when the country decides on its favourite sportsman or woman of the year, and competition has rarely been so tight.
Looking back at previous winners, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is often a one-horse race. Joe Calzaghe, Andrew Flintoff, Kelly Holmes, Jonny Wilkinson, Paula Radcliffe, Steve Redgrave…it is often very clear who will win based on their achievements that year.
However, 2008 has been a special year for British sport, with our most successful Olympic Games for however many years, and the youngest ever Formula One World Champion.
There are no fewer than 7 Olympic Champions in the shortlist of ten sports stars, whilst Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray and Joe Calzaghe make up the numbers.
Rebecca Adlington, double Olympic swimming gold medallist, is the marginal favourite at 10/11 with Boylesports, but Hamilton is hot on her heels at 21/10 with SportingBet. Chris Hoy also has a reasonable chance, thanks to his three golds, and is available at 9/2 with Ladbrokes.
I’ve put a fiver on Hoy at those generous odds - he’s been at the top of the cycling world for some years, and his three gold medals outnumber Adlington’s two. If Hamilton doesn’t win it, it’s got to be Hoy.
Strictly Come Dancing betting

After the excitement of the Ryder Cup, there’s a bit of a lull in top sporting action - it’s the beginning of the season in many sports and events like the Heineken Cup and the climax to the Formula One season are still a few weeks away.
But sports fans shouldn’t worry too much - Strictly Come Dancing is underway again on the BBC with a few big sporting names to keep an eye on.
Rugby star Austin Healey seems to have installed himself as favourite after one round, available at 7/2 with Coral. Swimmer Mark Foster is on at 12/1 with Paddy Power, whilst British tennis player Andrew Castle is at 20/1 with totesport.
Sportsmen and women have been known to do pretty well in this competition, with Matt Dawson, Colin Jackson, Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash all starring in previous series.
Nevertheless, Rachel Stevens is worth a punt at 4/1 with Boylesports - she isn’t a sportswoman…but she is a dancer!
