Ryder Cup preview and betting
This weekend’s fixture in Valhalla is possibly one of the most widely anticipated events the sport has ever seen. The action will be broadcast in more countries than ever before, non-golfers are getting just as excited and the Europeans are considerable favourites.
I’m looking forward to another European victory Away from home. I can’t see it being another crushing defeat, but I think Nick Faldo’s team has the quality to bring home the spoils. Another 18.5-9.5 is 40/1 with Paddy Power, but I like the look of Europe to win 15-13 at 11/1 with the same bookie.
Padraig Harrington, back-to-back Open winner and US Open champion, is the trump card in Europe’s pack. Not only will he carry an air of confidence that will rub off on his team mates, but his presence will strike fear into the American team as the Irishman is living evidence of the shift in power to Europe.
Sergio Garcia is also one to watch. The charismatic Spaniard loves the Ryder Cup and his maverick style suits matchplay ideally, even if it hasn’t yet won him a major, and is a great character to have in the dressing room. I’d like to see the young gun paired with Miguel Angel Jimenez in what could be our strongest pairing.
Garcia is available at 4/1 with Boylesports and Bet365 (among others) to be the top European point scorer whilst Harrington is 11/2.
